Herbert "Sarge" Phelps is a New Orleans born pioneer of progressive talk-radio in the south. Phelps graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. in Sports Administration and Coaching in 1983. After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast region, Phelps came out of retirement to become an activist for Katrina issues.
Phelps began giving reports on the Mike Malloy Show on Air America in 2005. A great deal of his reports[ clarification needed ] covered the lack of governmental response to Hurricane Katrina and the hardships that the victims were suffering.
Phelps continued reporting on Air America until 2007 when moved to his own radio show, first known as the "Unreported News Radio Show". The show became the first progressive radio show to air regularly on a terrestrial station in Mississippi on WQRZ FM.[ citation needed ] The show, was the first and last liberal talk-radio show to air on a Mississippi radio station.
Phelps currently hosts a progressive talk-radio show called "Coffee With Sarge" that is now carried on 1480 KPHX-AM Phoenix, Az. and WXBH-FM in Louisville Ky, as well as the Roots Up Radio Network and is affiliated with the Jeff Farias Show.
As the first and only progressive\liberal talk-show host to ever air out of Mississippi, Phelps faced a great deal of opposition. In January 2007, Phelps reported that approximately 300 section 8 housing residents and Katrina Victims were being evicted for commercial development. Phelps was able to legally have the eviction stopped1.
After receiving numerous death threats in Mississippi, Phelps moved to Arizona. Phelps show continues to highlight Katrina issues2.
Talk radio is a radio format containing discussion about topical issues and consisting entirely or almost entirely of original spoken word content rather than outside music. Most shows are regularly hosted by a single individual, and often feature interviews with several different guests. Talk radio typically includes an element of listener participation, usually by broadcasting live conversations between the host and listeners who "call in" to the show. Listener contributions are usually screened by a show's producers to maximize audience interest and, in the case of commercial talk radio, to attract advertisers. Generally, the shows are organized into segments, each separated by a pause for advertisements; however, in public or non-commercial radio, music is sometimes played in place of commercials to separate the program segments. Variations of talk radio include conservative talk, hot talk, liberal talk, and sports talk.
The Randi Rhodes Show is a talk radio show hosted by Randi Rhodes. The show combines her progressive political commentary with listener participation and live interviews. It was originally broadcast on Air America Radio, Nova M Radio, and Premiere Networks. The show ended with Premiere on May 16, 2014. The show returned on Monday, June 6, 2016 as a podcast through www.randirhodes.com.
KLOS is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Los Angeles, California and serves the Greater Los Angeles area. The station is owned by Meruelo Media. KLOS airs a mainstream rock radio format and has broadcast rock music in some form since 1969. The KLOS studios are located in Burbank and its transmitter is situated atop Mount Wilson. Free Speech TV (FSTV) is an American progressive news and opinion network. It was launched in 1995 and is owned and operated by Public Communicators Incorporated, a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax-exempt organization founded in 1974. Distributed principally by Dish Network, DirecTV, and the network's live stream at freespeech.org and on Roku, Free Speech TV has run commercial free since 1995 with support from viewers and foundations. Jeff Mwaura Koinange is a Kenyan journalist and host of Jeff Koinange Live, a talk show on Citizen TV since February 2017. He is also a radio host, alongside Nick Odhiambo, of the breakfast show at HOT 96, the English-language station owned by Royal Media Services. He was a judge representing Kenya at the new East Africa's Got Talent, which premiered on 4 Aug 2019. He served as the Africa correspondent for CNN and CNN International from 2001 to 2007, and later as chief reporter at TV station K24 from 2007 to December 2012. Before joining KTN, he worked with KTN on his branded news program, Jeff Koinange Live. He had earlier served as the chief anchor Africa for Arise Television Ltd based in Johannesburg. Nova M Radio, later known as On Second Thought, was a radio syndication service providing progressive talk programming. Founded as Nova M Radio by Sheldon and Anita Drobny in 2006, its stated purpose was to purchase, own, and operate underperforming radio stations in small and medium-sized markets.
